Sometimes you just need to take ten. Preferably away from the table, so you don't immediately run into whatever it was that was bothering you.

Oh, Emma, I know that pain. It almost made me give up D&D. It is beyond infuriating to spend 1+ Hours on a character only to see it killed off right away. And it can feel very much like you have no control at all over your situation, especially at a low levels.
That's why not railroading is so important. If the players have zero control, they will get board and resent the DM.

"You spend an hour making characters just to watch them die!" Wait wait wait, do some people only take an hour to make a character? I want that super power.
